About Army Body Fat Calculation

The US Army uses specific formulas to calculate body fat percentage based on circumference measurements. This method is used for fitness assessments and maintaining military readiness standards.

Measurement Instructions

  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple)
  • Waist: Measure at the navel level (men) or at the smallest circumference (women)
  • Hips: Measure at the largest circumference (women only)
  • All measurements should be taken while standing relaxed

Calculation Formulas

For Males: %Body Fat = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76

For Females: %Body Fat = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387

Army Standards

The US Army has maximum allowable body fat percentages that vary by age and gender. Soldiers who exceed these standards may face consequences including mandatory weight control programs.

Limitations

  • This method provides an estimate and may not be as accurate as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing
  • Results can be affected by measurement technique
  • Individual factors like muscle mass and body composition are not fully accounted for
