What is BMR?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories you burn as your body performs basic (basal) life-sustaining functions. Commonly also called Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), which is the calories burned if you stayed in bed all day.

BMR Equations

  • Mifflin-St Jeor Equation: Considered the most accurate for calculating BMR
  • Revised Harris-Benedict Equation: Updated version of the original Harris-Benedict
  • Original Harris-Benedict Equation: The original equation from 1919

Factors Affecting BMR

Your BMR is influenced by several factors: age, weight, height, gender, body composition, and genetic factors. Muscle mass is particularly important - the more muscle you have, the higher your BMR.
